History - throughout the years

In the early days the Club provided more varied events than is the case today.   A glimpse of the early Minute Books gives evidence of Whist Drives, Dances and a Tennis Club.

Early rambles took place each fortnight on alternative Saturdays (half days in the afternoon) Sundays (all day commencing at 1000 a.m.).   Coach rambles became popular in the 1950s with destinations including Swaledale, Weardale and Wensleydale.   A feature of early membership was the distinct lack of men, with several appeals going out each year to attract more males.  In 1979 a junior section was established, and despite being successful for a few years was disbanded in 1987 due to lack of support.  Shortly after this a decision was made to expand the rambles to the twice-monthly format we enjoy today.
