History - Holiday Fellowship (HF)

Holiday Fellowship Holidays was formed in Darwen Near Blackburn in 1913 by Reverend T. A. Leonard.  He was concerned for those who worked in towns and cities in the North West of England who did not have the opportunity to experience the open air and attractive countryside which surrounded them.

The intention was to provide a week's holiday for no more than the then weekly wage.   The first property acquired was Bryn Corach at Conwy near Llandudno, North Wales.   The purchase was funded by the membership subscription of the new society.  HF Holidays became a membership organisation on a non-profit basis, and many people in those days quickly became members in order to enjoy the opportunity to walk and converse with like-minded individuals.   Anyone could book a holiday as long as they became a member - or an associate for twelve months.   Some of our current members maintain a membership with HF Holidays.

It is curious how the general principles still apply, even though today HF guests come from all walks of life and from all nationalities.   Over the years the Society has expanded considerably, the war years were very difficult with many country houses requisitioned by the Government as hospitals or officer accommodation, but throughout that time the atmosphere of guests sharing similar activities in a friendly way has been maintained.  Today HF Holidays organises walking and special interest holidays.
